The dress fits, the flowers are ordered, the reception is planned.  What’s left?  Planning the ceremony!  It is easy to get so focused on the reception or how everything will look at your wedding that you forget to put enough time and energy into planning the actual ceremony.  However, there is one section of the ceremony that deserves your attention, the scriptures!

The reading of scriptures during a wedding ceremony grounds the entire event.  It is the reminding moment that marriage was created for us by God.  Use the scripture readings to focus your attention and the attention of your guests on God and his blessings.

Traditional wedding verses can be found all over the internet.  Check out your local Bible book store.  I bet they have resources that list the traditional verses as well.  But what if you want something different?  If you want to avoid the usuals, try to focus on your theme.  What are the prominent features of your wedding?  If you are having an outside wedding, perhaps you will consider verses that deal with creation.  If your focus is on family and friends, you may want to focus on Paul’s teachings of fellowship together as one body of Christ.

Consider different versions of the Bible.  You may really like the meaning behind a specific verse, but not like the way it is worded.  A different translation may give you the right wording to fit your personalities.  You also can use a different translation to modernize the scripture a bit.  Many brides and grooms who steer clear of traditional methods prefer translations like the Message rather than the King James Version.

Another factor to consider is the delivery of your scriptures.  Will you have a minister or priest read it, or a friend?  Scripture readings are a great way to involve friends and family in your ceremony.  Occasionally, the bride and groom find ways to deliver their own scripture verses.

Once you decide on the verses you want, think of ways to showcase them.  Perhaps you want a piece of your scripture typed in the program.  Some couples even have a wooden picture frame engraved with the verse.  They can then use the frame for a wedding picture.

Remember, weddings began with God.  The scripture verses are an easy way to reconnect with God, give honor to Him, and thank Him for the beautiful journey you and your spouse are beginning together.
